About

The Ujima Legacy Fund is an African American male giving circle. It was inspired by conversations in a barbershop and the example set by a local postal worker turned philanthropist. Created in January 2013 by three non-profit executives, Ujima seeks to increase the philanthropic impact of African American men in the Richmond Region. Members contribute a minimum of $1,100 and award a grant to a deserving non-profit that empower youth, through education related programming. Since its inception in 2013, Ujima donors have awarded approximately $130,000 in grants to six (6) local non-profits.

The Ujima Legacy Fund is an initiative in collaboration with The Community Foundation, an IRS-recognized 501(c)(3) public charity.

Overview

UJIMA LEGACY FUND provides a forum for civic-minded African American men to increase our philanthropic presence and impact in the Metro Richmond community. Members contribute a minimum of $1,100 to participate in an investment pool to be awarded to one nonprofit selected through an application process. Ujima Legacy Fund seeks to support projects that will have a positive impact on youth and young adults (ages 12 to 21 years) in our region, with a particular emphasis on underserved youth populations. It is anticipated that two grants in the range of $20,000 - $40,000 will be awarded in 2016.

Grant Priorities

To be eligible to apply for a Ujima Legacy Fund grant, your organization must be a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization that serves the residents of the City of Richmond, and/or the counties of Chesterfield, Hanover, Henrico, Goochland and/or Powhatan.

Deadline

To be considered, Ujima Legacy Fund proposals must be submitted in March 2018 (date TBA) by 5:00 p.m..

Review Process

Review

A volunteer committee of Ujima Legacy Fund will review requests, conduct site visits with selected organizations in April, and invite five finalists to present at a meeting of full membership in May.

Decision

The award decision will be finalized through a live vote on (date TBA).

Announcement

The award will be announced and celebrated at the Annual Event in May 2017.
